RoadIntel Launches Continuous AI Road Intelligence Platform with WIS
RoadIntel, in partnership with Waste Innovation Systems (WIS), today announced the launch of its AI Road Intelligence platform, designed to provide local authorities with one of the most frequently updated views of their road infrastructure available.
Unlike traditional road inspections that rely on dedicated survey vehicles or periodic manual assessments, RoadIntel captures high-resolution imagery from cameras installed on refuse collection vehicles already operating throughout a municipality. As these vehicles complete their normal collection routes, they continuously gather data from the road network without disrupting existing operations or requiring additional fleet resources.
Using advanced artificial intelligence and computer vision, the platform automatically analyses every journey to identify road defects such as potholes, cracking, edge deterioration and surface wear, while simultaneously mapping and monitoring road assets including signs, road markings, gullies, lighting columns and other infrastructure. Every observation is geolocated and presented through an intuitive dashboard, enabling engineers to prioritise maintenance using accurate, up-to-date information.
Because refuse collection vehicles regularly travel almost every street within a local authority, the RoadIntel platform delivers continuous infrastructure intelligence rather than occasional snapshots. This enables councils to detect issues earlier, monitor changes over time, improve asset management and make better-informed maintenance decisions while reducing inspection costs.
